Name that painting

2022-23

Name That Painting

I recently started using nonbinary names to title my work. I think this gives the paintings a personality even though they are for a large part abstractions. This seems odd and humourous – abstraction is non-specific, but a name is the opposite. A painting with an identity has something to gain.

My Process

I start with collage and paint utilizing both sides of the translucent surface I strive to reach some degree of balance utilizing both harmony and dissonance. My goal is to create something unique combining both colour and space – that seems functional.

About

John Drew Munro is a Montréal artist specializing in encaustic and oil paintings on wood and paper, primarily abstract. Since 1984, he has worked and exhibiting nationally and internationally. In addition to working with traditional mediums, he also uses digital tools to generate imagery  that can be integrated with the finely-tuned techniques he has employed over his years as a painter. His ongoing goal is to create a body of work of mixed-media/acrylic collage as well as an equal body of digitally-based work.
